My research focuses on events at nerve endings that are essential for the exocytotic release of neurotransmitter. Abundant progress has implicated several proteins as essential contributors to the cascade of events that culminate in the fusion of the synaptic vesicle membrane with the presynaptic plasma membrane. But, it remains unclear how these proteins cooperate to drive the ultrafast, quantal secretion of neurotransmitter. I am continuing collaborations with several groups to pursue answers that will lead to a better understanding of this process.
